oh! bento

This is one of my favourite things about Japan so far.

It gives new meaning to the concept 'lunchbox'. I especially like the ones that has pink lotus root in it.

I just received a call from my one school's secretary, saying they are ordering bentos tomorrow for lunch, would I like one?

Oh, and would I..

The introductory speech I have to give in front of the whole school tomorrow, in Japanese, seems trivial because.. I'll have bento for lunch.

As bento means lunchbox, what's usually in your bento? isa

The bento is always a lucky paket. I suppose you can concoct your own, but the ones I've had were pre-ordered.

It always has a lot of rice. 2/3 rice, with some black seeds and a super-salty pickled plum. Like a cherry on the top, only it draws all the moisture out of your mouth.

Condiments. I love the condiments here almost more than the ones you get with Indian food. Kelp and seeweed. Spinach. Cabbage. Carrot slithers, usually pickled to some extent. Fried chicken, on the bone or on a stick. Potato balls. Fish. Fish. Fish. Abalone, crab, squid, octopus.. if it swam somewhere during it's life, you'll most probably find it bento'ed.
